Another Tory MP has revealed the division within the struggling Party by choosing to support a Reform UK candidate over a fellow Conservative. Here’s the full scoop.
Tory MP Makes Switch
Days after the election announcement, yet another Tory MP switched allegiance to a different Party due to a lack of confidence in the Prime Minister.
Sunak’s Defection Woes
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has faced a tumultuous year of resignations and defections from his own Party members as he attempts to lead the Tory Party through the trenches.
Sunak Announces Summer Election
Despite rumours circulating that Sunak was on the verge of being ousted from his own Party members, he survived long enough to finally announce a Summer election.
Mass Tory Exodus
Despite those rumours never coming to fruition, over 60 Tory MPs have shown discontent as they either resign or show support for rival Parties.
Telford MP Wants Out of Tory Party
The latest Tory MP to show a lack of confidence in the Party is Lucy Allan, Telford’s MP, who announced her defection to a rival Party.
Allan Defects to Reform UK
Allan announced she would be switching her allegiance to Reform UK, the contentious right-wing Party led by controversial figure Richard Tice.
Ending a 9-Year Run
Allan has since been suspended by the Tory Party for the decision. Allan has been Telford’s MP since 2015 but decided to step down for the general election.
Supporting Reform Candidate for Telford
The Telford MP announced that she would support Reform UK’s Alan Adams as her successor in the constituency instead of the Conservative candidate.
Announcing Her Resignation
In a statement posted on social media, Allan announced, “I have resigned from the Conservative Party to support Alan Adams to be Telford’s next MP.”
Backing Reform UK
Allan asserted that she believed Reform UK’s Alan Adams was a better fit for the role, claiming the pair had built a good relationship over the years.
Reform Candidate “Best Person for the Job”
Allan insisted “I have known Alan for many years and he is genuinely the best person for the job” before making her feelings clear about the Labour Party.
Stopping Labour at All Costs
Admitting she wants the best for Telford, Allan also claimed that she did not believe the Tory candidate, Hannah Campbell, would stop Labour from gaining the seat.
Labour’s Potential “Walkover”
Allan asserted, “I want the best for Telford and I can’t just let the Labour candidate have a walkover,” citing Labour’s anticipated landslide victory.
Polls Show Possible Labour Landslide
Labour is currently 30 points ahead of the Tories in the polls, with Reform UK sitting just behind them in third place, showing the rise of the right-wing Party.
Lee Anderson Joins Reform
Other Tory MPs recently defected to Reform, including Lee Anderson, who was suspended by the Tory Party for his comments on the Mayor of London.
Anderson’s Controversial Comments
Anderson was suspended for making Islamophobic comments towards Mayor Sadiq Khan, asserting that the Mayor of London had allowed Muslims to take over the city.
Sunak’s on the Fence Approach to Islamophobia
The Prime Minister suspended Anderson for his comments, although refrained from labelling them Islamophobic, showing that he is on the fence when it comes to anti-Muslim rhetoric.
Farage Makes the Headlines
Former UKIP and Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage is an ambassador for Reform UK, recently making the news for his controversial comments on Islam.
Farage’s Anti-Muslim Rhetoric
Farage claimed that Muslims do not “support British values” just days after revealing he would not be standing in the summer election as originally intended.
Supporting a Right-Wing Party
Allan’s decision to support Reform UK over the Tories shows the divide with the Party along with her willingness to support a Party whose members have shown radical views towards Islam.
