NHS Gets Tough: Streeting Backs Policy to Turn Away Racist Patients

The Secretary of Health and Social Care is not playing Mr Nice Guy and has permitted the NHS to turn unruly, abusive people away without helping them. 

No Racists Allowed

The Secretary of State of Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, has issued a strict warning that “abuse” and “racism” towards NHS Staff is not tolerated. His warning also allows the NHS to turn those people away without medical treatment. 

Risking Harm to Others

Streeting’s statement comes after reports about two Filipino nurses working at the NHS risked being injured as “thugs” threw their taxi with rocks.

Heading to Work Only to Be Attacked

The nurses were said to start “emergency cover shifts” and were headed out to the hospital with their taxi before they got attacked with rocks thrown at it.  

The Chaos Is Mindless

Streeting visited the Leeds Cancer Centre and expressed his concerns about the treatment of the staff. He also spoke of the “mindless thuggery” that’s gone rampant in the streets of England. 

Shameful and a Disgrace

The Health Secretary said that the individuals who attacked those nurses have brought “shame” upon the UK “flag” and the country,” according to Mirror.” 

Grateful for the NHS

In his speech, Streeting said that “everyone owes the NHS gratitude at some point in their lives.” He mentioned that he was very grateful for the NHS and the staff who had helped him during his cancer treatment. Still, the staff is not appreciated and is instead abused. 

The Abuse Is Appalling

The State Secretary of Health said that he was appalled by the level of thuggery and racism occurring in Sunderland and directed towards foreign NHS staff. 

NHS Staff Are Afraid to Go to Work

Amanda Pritchard, the NHS Chief Executive, has also expressed concern for the NHS Sunderland staff. Pritchard said that the violence in the streets has put fear in medical workers, and they are scared to come to work. 

Understaffed and More Stress for NHS Workers

Not only does the fear of coming to work due to street violence leave the NHS further understaffed, but it just adds more baggage to the already ladened issues surrounding the NHS and the way the former conservative party allegedly left it.  

Rioting and Unrest

The Mirror reported on riots in Sunderland and the police having to cope with the distress and unrest in the area. 

Putting a Foot Down

The State Secretary of Health and Social Care has made it clear that he “will not tolerate under any circumstances… that social care staff and health staff in any health care setting to be subjected to intimidation

“Zero Tolerance” Policy

He further said that there is “zero tolerance” for violent and racial behaviour. The NHS has formally granted permission to turn such unruly and racist, intimidating people away.

Travelling Is Dangerous

Medical staff were also advised to travel in groups or take routes that don’t have the unrest carrying on. The Mirror reported that doctors, nurses, and all other medical staff were cautioned to “remain vigilant.”

Urging for the Mindless Thuggery to Stop

According to the Mirror, the health secretary also noted that the UK government would not allow “mindless thuggery” to continue on the streets. He mentioned the uptick in violence, including riots by the public, specifically the “far-right agitators,” he said.  

 Worried About Safety

It’s alleged that the far-right “defunct” English Defence League has been the “instigators” of the violence. Nursing Times has reported that fellow medical staff are showcasing their concern for the safety of the nurses within the NHS. 

A Word From the Matron

The Senior Matron at the NHS, Louie Horne, had said that the nurses from the attacks had confirmed they were afraid to come to work. She mentioned in a statement that “we stand united in advocating for the safety, respect and dignity of our colleagues.”  

The Hostility Must Stop

The matron also noted in her statement that that the NHS condemns the hostility and racism towards the medical staff. She said that the NHS staff play a critical role in helping “provide essential medical care.” 

They Must Learn From What They Do

She further added that the nurses have continued to show “resilience” and “commitment” and “shouldn’t have to face such intimidation,” Horne said. She appealed to the UK government to make sure that those attacking the nurses were dealt with and “pays a heavy price.”
