Following on from the report, Rachel Reeves issued a statement after being pressured to answer questions on the leaked report information.

Reeves gave a cagey answer, suggesting that she wasn’t a huge fan of rent caps but wouldn’t rule anything out.

Reeves said, “I think that (rent caps) should be up to local areas to decide. There may be the case for that in some local areas, but as a blanket approach, I’m not convinced by that.”
Distancing Labour From Leaked Report
A party spokesperson distanced Labour itself from the report, suggesting that nothing had been confirmed yet while trying to assure that it will protect renters.
Rent Caps “Not Party Policy”
“While we do believe action needs to be taken to protect renters and rebalance power, rent controls are not Labour Party policy,” the spokesperson said.
“Extortionate” Rent Hikes Accepted
Despite not promising anything regarding rent caps, Labour acknowledged the “extortionate” prices being charged by landlords while outlining the risks of rent caps.
The Risks of Capping Rent
The Labour Party’s statement outlined that rent caps could devastate the housing shortage, arguing that lower prices could decrease supply.
No-Fault Evictions
Another issue outlined in the report was the potential to ban no-fault evictions that happen all too often in the UK, devastating families as they’re left to fight for a new place to live.
Conservatives Break a Promise
The Conservative government also promised to ban no-fault evictions. However, the Party failed to act on it, opening the door for Labour to use this to its advantage during an election campaign.
Acting on Government’s Failures
“In government, Labour would act where the Conservatives have failed to ensure fairness and security for renters,” Reeves promised.
Labour’s Plan to Tackle Housing Crisis
As well as capitalising on the Tories’ failed no-fault evictions promise, Labour promised to abolish “section 21,” end “tenant bidding wars,” and extend “Awaab’s Law to the private rented sector.”
Labour Releases Action Plan
Labour released its “first steps” to the public in the likely event that Sir Keir Starmer’s Party won the general election.
Changing Britain After Tory Downfall
The steps focused partly on the economy and immigration issues, and the Party continuously promised they would change Britain after 14 years of Tory rule.
