The Labour Party has announced the first “steps” it will take to try and rebuild Britain after 14 years of Tory rule. Here’s the full story.
Starmer’s Big Ideas
Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has revealed Labour’s initial plans for the country if he becomes the next Prime Minister.
Changing Britain
Starmer has insisted these initiatives will be enough to “change Britain” after 14 years of Conservative rule.
Polls Reveal Likely General Election Results
Some claim the general election, which is yet to be announced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has already been decided after significant polling results.
Potential for a Landslide
Recent polls place the Labour Party 30 points ahead of the Conservatives, predicting a landslide victory for Starmer.
Starmer Signs off Steps
The “first steps” were recently laid out on the Labour Party website, signed off by Sir Keir Starmer, who will announce them at a conference in Essex.
Delivering “Economic Stability”
Labour’s website announced the Party, if it were victorious in the election, would “deliver economic stability” after the Tories put the country into a recession at the beginning of the year.
Promising to Reduce NHS Waiting Times
The second step promised to reduce NHS waiting times as the National Health Service struggles to keep up with a lack of funding and increased demand.
Immigration Issues to Be Addressed
After Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s contentious Rwanda Bill was finally passed into law after months of back-and-forth between MPs and Lords, Starmer announced his own plans to tackle immigration woes.
Targeting People Smugglers
Starmer recently announced he would create a new “border control taskforce” consisting of special investigators to root out people smuggling gangs across Europe.
Labour’s “Border Security Command”
Labour’s website confirmed this announcement by adding “Launch a new border security command” to its list of steps.
Energy Bills at Focus
Starmer pledged that the Party would “Set up great British Energy” as one of the steps after energy bills soared under Tory leadership.
Starmer Pledges “Cheaper Energy Bills for Good”
Starmer insisted “if you want cheaper energy bills for good, these first steps show what a Labour government will do to help you” in a column he wrote in the Daily Mirror.
Anti-Social Behaviour Crackdown
The fifth step involved cracking down on the rise in anti-social behaviour across the country, with Starmer pledging in his column that these steps would “make a real difference to people’s lives.”
Making a Difference to Local Areas
Starmer noted in his column that these steps will positively affect those who live in areas “plagued by anti-social behaviour.”
A Flood of Teachers
Lastly, the final step pledged to employ thousands of new teachers in British schools, with Starmer arguing this will give schools “higher standards” for children.
Tory Reaction Slams Starmer’s Steps
Tory chairman Richard Holden insisted that despite these steps, the Labour Party doesn’t have a real plan to change the country.
Sunak Echoes Tory Chairman’s Words
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has repeatedly told the Commons during PMQs that Starmer “has no plan” to run the country if he were elected.
A Changed Labour Party
The Labour Party’s plan seems to be a campaign that focuses on Labour being a “changed” Party from the days of Jeremy Corbyn’s reign.
Anti-Semitism Claims
Labour is focusing on this after Corbyn and his staff were accused of anti-semitism, with figures like Diane Abbott still under investigation.
Rebuilding Public Trust
Starmer’s key steps show an attempt to rebuild trust in the British public after many lost confidence in the Party after the previous Labour government 14 years before.
