President Joe Biden is passing the reins to Kamala Harris, who has been his vice president since he was elected. Here’s how Kamala could possibly add value and compete with Trump.
Kamala Harris for US President?
Among the many candidates in the Biden Administration, Kamala Harris has been shown to be the most eligible. Forbes reported that Joe Biden has endorsed her as his official next in line for the presidency.
Kamala’s Family
Kamala Harris, former vice president to Joe Biden and now running for the presidency, comes from a mixed ancestry. Her mother, Shayamala Gopalan Harris, is from Chennai, India, and her father, Donald Jay Harris, is of Jamaican American descent.
Former Prosecutor
Before becoming a vice president to Joe Biden, Harris was formally a prosecutor. She was also a Deputy District Attorney in a California county. Most of her career was in law, during which time she undertook many changes.
Reform Law
Harris also fought for prisoners to serve life without parole instead of the death penalty. She was elected attorney general and oversaw the Justice Department in 2010. She worked on reform efforts and addressed various public safety issues and implementations.
Biden Bows Out
Biden had said, “It is in the best interest of my party and my country to stand down.” Biden had written a letter ending his campaign and expressing some of the achievements accomplished during his administration. He also thanked Harris and everyone else who had supported him and made it possible.
Running for Senator and Becoming Vice President
Harris ran for senate in 2017 and became the vice president for the Biden administration in 2021.
New Candidate Dash
According to Forbes, Biden’s exit from the elections this late in the campaign has not been seen in the history of modern politics. Reports say this creates a frantic “dash” for a suitable replacement.
Some “Historic” Changes
While Biden’s exiting the campaign surprised America and voters, it isn’t the first time an American president left the running for his vice president.
Other Potential US Presidents Did It Too
In 1968, the then president, Landon B Johnson, gave up his running to his vice president Hubert Humphrey. Nixon won that campaign and became the 37th president of the USA from 1967 to 1974.
Replacement Candidate
Biden’s official replacement will be selected based on votes from the party. President Biden has also said that he fully supports Harris and commented that his decision to choose her as a running mate in 2020 was his “best decision.”
According to the Reuters Poll
Forbes reported a Reuters poll that showed that as many as 69% of American voters felt that Biden was too old to continue running for another term in the presidency.
YouGov Poll
Meanwhile, a YouGov poll from early July suggests that more people supported Biden over Harris as a potential presidential candidate. 47% of voters wanted Biden to step down, and 56% supported the Biden family, saying they were very “influential.”
Other Candidate Potential
While Biden had formally nominated Harris as his successor, the people tied Harris with former first lady Michelle Obama at 65% of possible candidates. The polls said Pete Buttigieg, with 56% of the votes, Gavin Newsom, with 54%, and Elizabeth Warren, with 51%.
What’s Happened Thus Far With Harris Running?
Harris has opted not to meet with Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, but instead, she will see him at a bilateral meeting that will take place later. Harris informed the public that her decision resulted from a “conflict of schedules.”
Unity in the Party
According to BBC, Harris has commented that she would “do everything in her power to unite our party, our nation and win this election.” She was speaking at her first campaign speech since being formally nominated.
Raising More Money
The Harris campaign has said more than $81 million was raised since Biden stepped down from campaigning.
Endorsements Overflow
There is much support for Kamala Harris, and BBC reports noted endorsements from large democratic figures like Nancy Pelosi, Gretchen Whitmer, JB Pritzker, and Andy Beshear.
Wants to Bring about Change
Harris has also said that if she were elected, she would restore the right to abortion. She also said, “Trump will bring America backward,” BBC reported. She said Trump wanted to bring back policies that didn’t work when people had fewer rights. Harris said her vision is to “bring opportunity, not just to get by, but to get ahead.”
Harris Thanks Her Supporters
In her campaign speech, Harris also thanked her supporters and said, “You love Joe, and you love me.”
