Following pro-Corbyn protests in his constituency, rumours have been sparked that the disgraced former Labour leader is about to make a return to frontline politics.
Former Labour Leader Sparks Rumours
Rumours are circulating about the possible return to frontline politics for Labour’s former leader, Jeremy Corbyn.
Corbyn’s Reign
The controversial figure led the Labour Party from 2015-2020, gaining a large following of Labour supporters until his sudden demise.
Suspended on Anti-Semitism Claims
Eventually, the Labour Party suspended Corbyn for his controversial words on the Jewish community, which were claimed to be anti-semitic.
Abbott Under Investigation
Jeremy Corbyn was suspended alongside former Shadow Health Secretary Diane Abbott, who is currently under investigation for her remarks regarding the Jewish community.
Is Corbyn Ready to Return?
The big question on everyone’s minds as the country awaits a general election announcement is whether Jeremy Corbyn will return to politics.
Pro-Corbyn Protests in North Islington
Recently, protests from Corbyn’s constituency have sparked rumours that Labour could be inclined to return its former leader to North Islington.
40 Years of Service to North Islington
Rachel Reeves, the Shadow Chancellor, was pushed for an answer to the rumours coming from North Islington, where Corbyn has been an MP for 40 years.
An Answer on Corbyn’s Future
Eventually, Reeves confirmed that Corbyn would not be making a return to frontline politics regardless of the protests from his constituency’s party.
Moving Away From the Past
The current Labour Party, led by leader Sir Keir Starmer, is focusing on changing its reputation away from a Party that’s associated with anti-semitism.
Former Labour Party “Rife” With Anti-Semitism
Reeves admitted that the old Labour Party was “rife” with anti-semitism when Jeremy Corbyn was leader, using this in her verdict on the former leader.
Admitting Previous Wrongdoings
“When Jeremy Corbyn was leader of the Labour Party, I’m afraid that antisemitism was rife within the Labour Party,” Reeves admitted.
Equalities and Human Rights Commission Investigates
Reeves cited the investigation, “we were investigated by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission over the treatment of Jewish people,” she said.
Corbyn’s Reluctance to Admit Faults
Following the investigation, Reeves asserted that Corbyn’s refusal to admit wrongdoing was part of the reason for his suspension.
Jeremy Corbyn “Sadly Refused” Anti-Semitism Acknowledgment
According to Reeves, “Jeremy Corbyn sadly refused to acknowledge what had happened in the Labour Party and his role within it.”
Corbyn “No Longer a Labour MP”
With the investigation still ongoing, Reeves confirmed that Corbyn would not be making a return, “He’s no longer a Labour MP and he will not be the Labour candidate at the next election,” she said.
Abbott Makes Public Apology
Diane Abbott, who is also under investigation for anti-semitism, has since apologised for her involvement and admitted wrongdoing.
Apology Not Enough for Return
Despite this apology, Abbott is still not welcomed back into the Party and is clearly aggrieved by this, as her recent comments show.
Welcoming Right-Wing MP to Labour
Responding to Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to welcome right-wing former Tory MP Natalie Elphicke to Labour, Abbott implied that there were double standards from her Party.
Abbott Waits for Acceptance
Labour accepted Elphicke’s apology after it was revealed she supported her husband during his legal case, where he was accused of assaulting a woman. However, Abbott is still waiting for her apology to be accepted.
An Eye on the Election
Labour’s refusal to accept Corbyn back into the party despite protests shows its commitment to establishing a new relationship with the public, which will be essential in winning electoral votes.
