A wave of far-right riots has turned the UK into an international embarrassment, prompting several countries to issue safety warnings and travel advice to their citizens. Here’s the full story.

Following the ongoing far-right riots plaguing the country, which have been stoked by online misinformation by far-right agitators, several countries have issued safety warnings to their citizens.
Arrests Fail to Quell Riots
The far-right violence, which has drawn both national and international attention, has led to over 400 arrests, though this has so far failed to quell the ongoing riots across England.
Tragic Murders Trigger Unrest
The current wave of violence was triggered by the tragic murder of three young girls during a dance class in Southport. Rumours have spread like wildfire online surrounding the race, religion and motives of accused attacker Axel Rudakubana, leading to unrest that has targeted asylum seekers and ethnic minorities, and which then led to violent clashes with riot police in various cities.
Musk: “Civil War Inevitable”
Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly Twitter, even took to his social media platform, where many of the false allegations surrounding the attack have been posted, to suggest that, due to the ongoing far-right riots, “Civil war is inevitable.”
Government Rejects Musk’s Claims
Despite the government strongly opposing the claims of the increasingly eccentric billionaire, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson stating there was “no justification” for such comments, it appears the spreading unrest has caught the attention of several governments abroad, who have warned their citizens against travelling to the UK.
Countries Issue Travel Warnings
Countries as diverse and widespread as Australia, Nigeria, Malaysia, the UAE, and Indonesia have all issued advisories urging their citizens to exercise caution when travelling to or moving around the UK.
Australia: Avoid Protest Areas
The Australian government issued a statement warning its citizens to “avoid areas where protests and riots are occurring due to the potential for disruption and violence. Monitor the media for information and updates. Follow the instructions of local authorities.”
Nigeria Warns of Unrest
Similarly, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a warning on X, stating, “Demonstrations by far-right and other extra-parliamentary groups in parts of the UK in recent weeks have been large, and in some instances unruly.”
Nigerians Advised to Avoid Protests
The statement urged Nigerians to be aware of the “increased risk of violence and disorder occasioned by the recent riots in the UK,” and advised them to avoid political processions, protests, rallies, and marches.
Malaysian, Indonesian Alerts
Asian countries like Malaysia and Indonesia have also urged their citizens to avoid crowded areas in the country, making specific mention of the ongoing far-right violence.
Malaysia: Stay Vigilant
The High Commission of Malaysia released a statement to its citizens: “Malaysians residing in or travelling to the United Kingdom are urged to stay away from protest areas, remain vigilant and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by local authorities.”
Indonesia: Avoid Large Crowds
Similarly, the Indonesian Embassy released a statement warning Indonesians in the UK to “avoid large crowds” and avoid areas that could become gathering places for “groups of demonstrators.”
UAE: Exercise Highest Caution
The UAE also issued a strong advisory, calling for its population to “exercise the highest level of caution” due to the “unstable security situation” in the UK. The advisory specifically recommended avoiding riots, protests, and crowded areas to ensure the safety of UAE citizens.
Past International Embarrassment
This is not the first time the UK has faced international embarrassment over domestic unrest, as similar travel advisories were issued by some countries following the riots which gripped England in the summer of 2011 following the police shooting of Mark Duggan.
Riots Target Minorities
However, the most recent riots are distinguished by their far-right extremist links, with the specific targeting of ethnic minorities, asylum seekers and Muslims.
UK’s Tarnished Reputation
The riots have not only created a security crisis but have also tarnished the UK’s international reputation, with scenes of mobs attacking mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers being set ablaze transmitted instantly around the globe.

Following years in which many within the previous Conservative government and its supporters in the media used asylum seekers and migrants as a convenient scapegoat, drumming up fears over their supposed failure to integrate and using asylum seekers coming to Britain in small boats as a political football, the country is now reaping the whirlwind.

With the catalyst of the recent riots, the tragic stabbings in Southport, being exploited by extremist groups to fuel unrest, it remains to be seen if the UK will ever be able to reclaim its mantle as a safe and secure country for minorities to live in or for foreigners to visit.
