Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s reelection hopes have been hit by a major blow at the hands of the Labour Party.
Tories Slip Down
A recent poll has revealed the worst for Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party, as they slip down even further on the public’s confidence scale.
Sunak’s Election Announcement Backfire
A poll conducted by Opinium showed that after Rishi Sunak announced an election for July 4th, his chances of winning have only worsened.
Labour Lead Grows
The poll was conducted during the final days of the month of May, showing that Labour’s lead grew by four percentage points, while the Tories’ score only reduced.
Sir Starmer’s Potential Landslide
Previously, Labour held a firm lead of 41%, although that’s now grown to 45%, making Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on course for victory.
Conservative Woes Deepen
On the other hand, the Conservatives previously had a score of 27%, but that dropped by two points, giving them just 25% of the votes.
Reform UK’s Increase
The right-wing Party Reform UK also saw an increase in its voting score by 1%, bringing its total to 11%.
Lib Dems Suffer Blow
Liberal Democrats suffered a blow, with their score reducing by two percentage points, from 10% to 8%, but it was the Tories who made the headlines.
National Service Announcement
After the election announcement, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced plans to reintroduce national service for 18-year-olds in the UK, but did this affect the poll?
National Service a Bad Decision
According to the poll, 45% of voters thought the national service plan was a bad move, while 35% were in favour of it, but this wasn’t the only Tory proposal that caused a stir.
Triple-Lock Plus Pension Support
The Tories also introduced a triple-lock plus pension scheme that favours the elderly, and the majority of those who took part in the poll agreed it was a good idea.
Labour’s Plans Under Scrutiny
The policy that received the most scrutiny from the public opinion poll was Labour’s plans to reduce the voting age to 16.
Targeting the Elderly
The Conservative policies mentioned all target elderly voters, whereas Labour’s policies are beneficial for younger voters, showing the poll is likely to be made up mostly of older voters.
Reduced Tory Popularity
Despite this, the Conservatives still managed to reduce their popularity, with their MPs not painting the Party in a good light outside of the election campaign.
Labour’s Largest Lead Since Liz Truss
The lead that Labour finds itself in is the largest the Party has held over the Tories since Lizz Truss’s short stint as Prime Minister, and she’s still having an effect today.
Truss’s Controversial Appearance
Recently, Truss appeared on an American far-right platform hosted by a misogynistic YouTuber, leading to calls for her removal from the Conservative Party.
Joking About Sexual Assault
The host of the platform, Carl Benjamin, made a remark to Labour MP Jess Phillips on social media that joked about sexually assaulting her.
Phillips’ Strong Letter to PM
Jess Phillips has since written a letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak urging him to take action against Lizz Truss for supporting the platform of someone with that sense of humor.
Sexual Assault “Joke” Revealed
“When I highlighted the volume of rape threats received by female MPs, including myself, Benjamin responded, ‘I wouldn’t even rape you’”, Phillips said in the letter.
Tory Mishaps Adding Up
When all of these actions from members of the Tory Party add up, it’s no surprise the public has decided to once again deal a severe blow to the Party’s reelection hopes.
