Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who is predicted to become the next Prime Minister in the general election, welcomed a right-wing former Tory MP to the Party just after the local elections.
Right-Wing Tory Joins Labour
The MP in question, Natalie Elphicke, is particularly disliked among the Labour ranks for her right-wing political views, but that’s not all.
Accused of Defending Husband
Natalie Elphicke has also been under fire recently for her role in her husband’s legal case, where he allegedly committed violence towards a woman.
Abbott Applauds Apology
Elphicke has since apologised for her role in the case, which the suspended Labour MP Dianne Abbott applauded her for.
Questioning Starmer’s Decision
Diane Abbott posted on social media, “Natalie Elphicke is right to apologise” although questioned Starmer’s approach.
Starmer’s “Unusual” Decision
“The decision to accept it 5 years after she first said it is unusual. Not everyone is treated with such generosity,” she posted.
Double Standards Accusation
Abbott was referring to herself, implying that she hasn’t been treated the same as Natalie Elphicke by the Labour Party during her investigation.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has been accused of double standards for accepting Natalie Elphicke’s apology but not Abbott’s, to which he responded cageyly.

Starmer gave a short response to the allegations, insisting that the leadership of the Labour Party would not interfere with Abbott’s current investigation.
Tory Donor Scandal Makes the News
More recently, Abbott has been in the news for being a victim of racial abuse by a Tory donor, Frank Hester.

Hester allegedly told his staff during a meeting that seeing Abbott on TV made him “want to hate all black women.”
Prime Minister Accepts Hester’s Apology
The Tory donor, who contributed £10 million to the Tory Party last year alone, became the centre of the scandal before the Prime Minister claimed he had accepted Hester’s “apology.”
Abbott’s Reaction to Comments
Abbott herself spoke out about her worry after the comments were made, claiming that they could’ve incited violence against her while she takes public transport across London.

Natalie Elphicke left the Tory Party shortly after the local elections, where the Tories lost almost 500 seats across the UK.

The decision to welcome Elphicke was already controversial, with Abbott’s comments only exacerbating the division within the Party.
