A day meant for celebration turned into chaos at the Notting Hill Carnival as violence marred the festivities, leaving police urging the public for help. Here’s the full story.

The Notting Hill Carnival, a celebration of Caribbean culture, arts, and heritage, has become the centre of controversy after the usually vibrant and cheerful event took a dark turn this year.
Marred by Violence
The annual event, which typically draws over a million attendees, was marred by a series of stabbings and assaults, which has led The Metropolitan Police to call for greater community cooperation in finding the culprits.
Frustration Over Recurring Violence
In remarkably stark language, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan expressed frustration over the recurring violence, stating, “We are tired of saying the same words every year. We are tired of telling families that their loved ones are seriously injured, or worse. We are tired of seeing crime scenes at Carnival.”
Community Responsibility
He added, “Carnival is a community event and the vast majority of people come to celebrate, to dance, to enjoy music and have a fantastic experience. It is the responsibility of all who value this event, who want to see it as the celebration it should be, to speak out and speak up about the violence that continues to overshadow it.”
Stabbings on Family Day
On Sunday, traditionally known as the Carnival’s “family day,” three individuals were stabbed, including a 32-year-old woman who was attending the event with her child. The woman remains in critical condition, while the two other victims, men aged 29 and 24, are in non-life-threatening conditions, with the latter having discharged himself from the hospital.
Significant Police Presence
The incidents occurred despite a significant police presence, with over 7,000 officers deployed to ensure the safety of attendees.
Public Urged to Help
The violence prompted Deputy Assistant Commissioner Adelekan to urge the public to come forward with any information that could help prevent further incidents or help the police catch Sunday’s assailants, stating, “It is no exaggeration to say that you could save a life by doing so.”
Carnival’s Historical Roots
The Notting Hill Carnival has a long history, dating back to 1966 when it was first held to celebrate Afro-Caribbean culture in London. Over the years, it has grown into Europe’s largest street festival, famous for its colourful parades, music, and dancing.
Challenges of Policing Carnival
However, as the Carnival has expanded, so too have the challenges associated with policing such a significant and densely packed event, and the task of policing the Notting Hill Carnival has not been without controversy.
“Two-Tier Policing” Controversy
In the lead-up to the launch of the Notting Hill Carnival, Former Scotland Yard inspector Mike Neville caused controversy after describing the event as the “ultimate in two-tier policing.”
The “Two-Tier” Conspiracy
“Two-tier” policing is a conspiracy theory which claims that police give preferential treatment to left-wing or ethnic minority protesters over right-wing ones. The concept of two-tier policing has been massively pushed online following the recent tragic murders in Southport, with right-wing figures like Nigel Farage, Elon Musk, and Tommy Robinson promoting the idea.
Football Comparison Criticism
In an interview with The Telegraph, Neville stated, “If the behaviour of the Notting Hill Carnival was replicated at football matches or any other event it would be banned. You see people openly smoking drugs, abuse of police officers, dancing with female officers to the point of sexual assault. I challenge anybody to do the same thing on the way to a Millwall football game.”
Accusations of Leniency
Similarly, Neville claimed police are ordered “only to arrest in the most extreme circumstances” so as not to appear racist.
Scotland Yard’s Response
Scotland Yard, however, has strongly refuted these claims, maintaining that its officers are instructed to make arrests whenever necessary, regardless of the event.
Vigilance From Police
Commander Charmain Brenyah stated ahead of the Carnival, “Officers will be maintaining a vigilant presence in and around the Carnival in an effort to identify and intervene against anyone intent on committing violence. They will use their search powers where there are grounds to do so in order to take weapons off the streets.”
Community Frustration
Despite reassurance from police, the violence at this year’s Carnival has led some in the community to express frustration over the difficulties that come with hosting such a significant event in a residential area.
Defence of the Carnival
However, others have defended the Carnival as an essential cultural celebration, with Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, previously comparing the safety of the Notting Hill Carnival to that of other major festivals, such as the Glastonbury.

Nevertheless, the incidents of violence have raised questions about whether the Carnival can continue in its current form without significant changes to its management and policing.
