Labour’s transport secretary, Louise Haigh, informed the bosses of Avanti West Coast and TransPennine that they must improve services or face the consequences.

During Labour’s election campaign, Haigh accused Avanti West Coast of offering “woeful service” as train cancellations increased.
Demanding “Immediate Action”
Now, as Labour’s transport secretary, she informed the bosses of the rail company that they had been getting away with an “unacceptable performance” and demanded “immediate action.”

“Through bold action to move fast and fix things, we can make sure passengers get the service they deserve with the biggest overhaul to our railways in a generation,” Haigh claimed.
A Terrible Record
According to reports, one in 15 Avanti West Coast train journeys were cancelled last year, resulting in Haigh’s concerns.

The Department for Transport called the meetings a “concerted new effort to bring together track and train and hold both sides accountable.”
