In the face of a looming electoral defeat, a record number of Conservative MPs, including Michael Gove, are stepping down, highlighting the deepening crisis within the party. Here’s the full story.
Mass Departures
As the highly anticipated general election on July 4 draws ever closer, a wave of Conservative MPs appear to have seen the writing on the wall and started stepping down en masse.
Sinking Ship
The number of Tories jumping from the sinking ship has surpassed the record set during Tony Blair’s 1997 landslide victory.
Michael Gone
Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, a key player in the Brexit campaign and the driving force behind the influential right-wing think tank Policy Exchange, announced his decision not to seek re-election.
“A New Generation Should Lead”
In a letter posted on X, formerly Twitter, Gove stated, “No-one in politics is a conscript, we are volunteers who willingly choose our fate. And the chance to serve is wonderful. But there comes a moment when you know that it is time to leave. That a new generation should lead.”
“Proud to Have Led”
Gove also boasted of his contribution to the UK’s Brexit referendum, saying he was “proud to have led the Vote Leave campaign.”
“Our Country Is Stronger”
He added, “Fundamentally our country is stronger with politicians in Westminster able to control our laws, our borders and our money.”
Significant Blow
Gove’s departure is a significant blow to the party, particularly given his long tenure and influence in various top government roles since 2010. However, he has also been a profoundly polarising figure for much of the public.
Andrea Leader-less
As if Gove’s announcement was not bad enough, Andrea Leadsom, the junior Health Minister, declared that she would not stand for re-election shortly after.
New Leadership
Leadsom, who reached the final stages of the 2016 Conservative leadership contest, cited the need for new leadership within the party.
“Decided Not to Stand”
Leadsom, who also posted her resignation on X, wrote, “After careful reflection, I have decided not to stand as a candidate for the forthcoming election.”
“Continue to Support the Conservative Party”
She continued, “I will continue to support the Conservative Party through this general election and in the future as the party best aligned with the ideals and values of the people of the United Kingdom.”
Internal Turmoil
Leadsom’s departure adds to the growing list of experienced MPs leaving the Commons. The mass departure is seen as a clear sign of the party’s internal turmoil and the daunting election challenges it faces.
Significant Threat
Among the departing MPs are veteran politicians such as Greg Clark and John Redwood, representing constituencies where the Liberal Democrats pose a significant threat.
Impacted Morale
The departure of so many senior MPs has undoubtedly impacted the morale within the Conservative Party, which was already nearing rock bottom after months of trailing Labour in the polls.
Hampered Efforts
These high-profile exits have hampered Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s efforts to rally the party and present a unified front.
Jumped the Gun
The sudden announcement of the election, which upset many within the Conservative Party who feared Sunak had jumped the gun, coupled with the substantial poll deficit facing the Tories, has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and resignation among the party ranks.
Severe Headache
The upcoming departure of so many Conservative MPs is not the only thing causing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak a severe headache.
Plagued by Mishaps
From day one, the Conservative campaign has been plagued by a series of mishaps, which have played havoc on party unity and seem to be rapidly causing him to lose the confidence of his few remaining MPs.
“Are You Captaining a Sinking Ship?”
One such blunder occurred at a campaign event in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, where Sunak was asked by a reporter: “We are just yards away from where the Titanic was built and designed. Are you captaining a sinking ship going into this election?”
Barely Concealed Chuckle
This incident, which led even the Northern Ireland secretary, Chris Heaton-Harris, to let out a barely concealed chuckle at the reporter’s joke, only added to the feeling that the wheels were already coming over the Conservative campaign.
Diminishing Experience
As the July 4 election approaches, the Conservative Party faces significant hurdles. The loss of so many seasoned MPs like Gove and Leadsome not only diminishes the party’s experience pool but also signals that even Conservative MPs are increasingly nervous about the party’s chances.
Dramatic Reshaping
With the Liberal Democrats and Labour poised to capitalise on Tory weaknesses, the upcoming election could see a dramatic reshaping of the UK’s political landscape.
Intense Scrutiny
With many MPs opting not to seek re-election, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s leadership is under intense scrutiny.
Increasingly Rudderless
The Conservative Party seems increasingly rudderless, even though the election campaign has only just begun. It remains to be seen if the electorate will lend their votes to a party that seems so devoid of hope.
